I checked 550,000 real ads to find what actually separates winners from dead ones.
Across the whole dataset, blended across every industry, ads that open with the deal (it's new, here's the price, sale ends Friday) get picked as winners almost twice as often as ads that open on a hook.
Not 10% better. Twice as often.
Here's the part that'll get me arguments though... "expert authority" as a labeled hook ranked dead last of everything tracked. Even below shock value.
Before anyone in supplements or health tells me I'm wrong, I know. I've watched a founder go from stuck at 1.4 ROAS to 2.6 in 30 days by putting a lab coat in frame one. Authority absolutely works in trust-heavy categories.
What the data's actually saying is authority wins you attention and scale. It does NOT win you the cheapest sale. In my own numbers, decision-assistance creative (just answering "which one do I need?") beats authority creative on CPA by roughly a third, every time, in the same account.
So a different job. Not a worse hook.
What's the last ad you ran that just answered a real question instead of establishing a credential first?
